BOOKS: So Many Books, So Little Time

I thought I was the only one. You all know I'm a Reader (capital R), a complete, some-might-even-say 'nerdy' Book Fanatic--and that's okay. There are so many great books, so many new discoveries out there just waiting to be found...and I must have at least fifty of those in my various to-be-read piles around the house.

It is important to hoard and stockpile: you just never know when you're going to need a book, and it has to be the Right Book for the occasion (whatever it may be); therefore, you need to have options, choices, a selection appropriate to any event. My not-so-bookish friends seem to appreciate this idiosyncrasy of mine, because when they need a book for a trip, a boring conference, a gift...well, who you gonna call?

On my recent early-birthday weekend getaway with hubby to Florida, I discovered--I'm not the only one. I'm not the only Book Fanatic with stockpiles. I'm not the only one who carefully chooses which book(s) to pack in the beach bag for such getaway occasions. It's a science I won't get into here today, but for more information, and recommendations on a whole bunch of terrific books:

So Many Books, So Little Time:
A Year of Passionate Reading
By Sara Nelson
(Berkley Books/Penguin, Oct. 2004)

Sara Nelson gets it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when So Many Books jumped off a center aisle book table at Barnes & Noble into my purchases a couple of weeks ago. You really have to be careful who you get your book information and recommendations from, you know. It didn't take long at all to realize Sara and I could be soul-sisters from another life in our book habits, likes, and dislikes--even our husbands, non-bookish, but fortunately tolerant and supportive creative types, who put up with us and our books, would likely get along very well.

So Many Books is a fun, quick read about a woman who devotes a year of her life to reading a book a week, working her way through her own stockpiles, and writing about the experience. Sara Nelson is a journalist and a book reviewer already, so it wasn't a complete sudden change of life or occupation.

So Many Books is much more than a series of 52 book reviews bundled together. Through the journey, Sara Nelson writes about her life and family, how she found and chose each book, what was going on at that time in her life, how this great literary experiment didn't exactly work out the way she thought it would.

I finished the last page of So Many Books, wishing the conversation could continue, I enjoyed it so much. I also now have a full page of new books to track down and beef up my own stockpiles, based on Sara Nelson's recommendations!
