Father's Day / Dad Gifts - Most Under $50

Father's Day is NEXT Sunday - Are you ready?!

Just in case, here are a couple of quick gift ideas, tried & true:
  1. Portable Hammock

Check out the new fold-out hammocks at Amazon.com, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target or REI - they're AWESOME! Compact enough to set up anywhere (we finally got rid of the huge, metal frame apparatus we had to have for the old-style free-standing hammock -- the one we had to buy a new hammock for every year, since the rope would rot out and get all disgusting). The portable hammocks are easy to fold out and easy to put away -- they fold down like a camp-chair and fit into their own backpack, not much bigger than a camp-chair, so you can take them anywhere: from the front porch to the backyard, to the beach, to the park, camping, etc.

  2. Go Fly a Kite

(This is our gift to Daddy this year -- shhhh!!!) Dads and kids are fascinated with kites. Moms, in our family anyway, are not allowed to touch the kites because they inevitably...well, it's really not my fault, but everytime they hand the string to me, the kite ends up tangled up in telephone wires, a tree, or just floating zippily away over the horizon... I found this cool kite kit at Barnes & Noble (Bargain Books) the other day, and it will be perfect for hubby and the kids to fly in the big field over at Piedmont Park, or at the beach, camping, etc: How To Make and Fly Stunt Kites
Note: This item is no longer available online, so check your local Barnes & Noble before they are all gone!

  3. The Game of LIFE

We bought this for our Daddy (my hubby) for his 40th birthday in March. The kids love it! There's a tempting re-make of the game, with the characters from Sponge Bob, but I stuck to the original, although it's not the LIFE of our childhood -- there are now mortgages and insurance, taxes and stock transactions to contend with, as you journey toward your final destination, with all your little pink and blue pegs packed into your little plastic station wagon...at least some things never change!

  4. Household Helper

I would not have put this on the list, because I hate getting household items or appliances as gifts, but I overheard my husband telling his Dad how cool our little cordless SHARK Sweeper/Vacuum is...and it figures, because anything with a plug or a battery pack holds such fascination for men, both young and old. I don't know why they were discussing vacuum cleaners (why would I ask?!), but if they are going to get excited about carpet sweeping, that's a good thing. Go with it!

  5. Great Gift Books for Dad

I can't speak highly enough of Atlanta author, Jedwin Smith, a journalist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who has twice been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and has written two incredible true-life adventure stories, sure to please Dad.
