Fun Science - SODA GEYSER

Oh, the long, lazy days of summer...which too quickly turn into, "Mom, I'm bored..."
(with the big sigh, requisite, of course!).

We've had some success with some Fun Science projects, two out of Dad's FHM - For Him Magazine (June 2006), so at least there is some redeeming value of what I generally refer to as "Comedy Central Mag For Men" -- you'll know what I mean if you've seen it in The Reading Room (a.k.a. bathroom).

From "EXTREME SCIENCE CLASS! The Mythbusters' Kari Byron [in a red bra, a short white lab jacket & spike heels] puts you in the mood for a little experimentation" (FHM Magazine, June 2006, pg. 78) -- tried, verified & certified as FUN by the Rebel Kids (who did NOT see the magazine, by the way!):

SODA GEYSER

Objective: Replicate Old Faithful with cola

"You'll be rewarded with an epic cola eruption...
it's instantaneous!"

You will need:
1. Two-liter bottle of soda (cheap, offbrand is fine)
2. One package (tube) of Mentos

Open the Mentos, take them out of the inner foil lining, and stack them back inside the outer paper roll, with one end folded closed. Holding the Mentos tube just above, open the two-liter soda and quickly release the Mentos to drop into the soda -- STAND BACK!! (Best to do this experiment outside in the yard.)

"Why it works: Soda has carbon dioxide gas pumped in during bottling...each gas bubble has water molecules surrounding it. Arabic gum in the Mentos -- the thing that makes it chewy -- causes the surface tension of these water molecules to break, releasing gas and instantly expanding the amount of stuff in the bottle. It's got nowhere to go except out the small hole..."
