Random Rebel: Out of Gas

Hey All, I am just checking in today on a Random Rebel Coffee Blog -- things are so weird, in so many ways, on so many levels, with the economy and the presidential campaign and GAS (or lack thereof).

We never even heard much about Hurricane Ike and the recent devastation in Texas, not like the full-on, 24/7 coverage-you-couldn't-hide-from-if-you-wanted-to before, during and after Hurricane Katrina, which we still think about and hear about and worry about three years later, even though the better part of nothing has been done to recover and rebuild...but that's a sidetrack ramble to the issue of the President of the United States coming on national television last night and essentially telling us, "We're screwed! Don't know 'zactly how it happened and all, but, gee, we better get on this thing and give those nice fellas over there on Wall Street some big, freakin' MONEY to bail them all out..."

What about all of us?! The little people, trying to keep a roof over our heads, jobs and income coming in, families together, children in school, food on the table, GAS in the tank?

I thought it was creepy on Monday morning when we headed out on our daily carpool, to the middle school and to hubby's office: We had 1/4 tank in our gas-guzzling Jeep SUV and I was thinking about getting gas, but every gas station along the way had bags over the pump handles, prices taken down off the signs, no cars...On the way back home, I drove to the grocery store (decided I'd better stock up a bit, since grocery deliveries might be delayed, too) and found gas at the Quik Trip across the street, which was reassuring. All the way over (less than five miles), I had been thinking, "What if this is the last gas? What if we're going into some Mad Max scenario and no one even realized it?" Very apocalyptic and, yes, weird, I know.

But Quik Trip (on Monday) had gas, and I figured the world would be all right. I had 1/2 tank of gas when we set out this morning, and figured I should probably fill it up again. When I got to the Quik Trip -- the pump handles were all bagged, the sign had no prices, there were no cars...okay, this is really, really surreal.

And John McCain doesn't want to debate Barrack Obama on Friday night. He 'suspended' his presidential campaign -- what does that mean, anyway?!

These are the ramblings of a madwoman this morning, but I know it's not just me. We are all in this together. I feel bewildered and apprehensive.

And I'm trying to get back to WORK, which I'll tell you about here in a minute (next blog). I need to finish my cup of coffee, with just a little bit of Bailey's in it today, and breathe -- on top of everything, it is a beautiful -- absolutely gorgeous -- day and this is my very-most-favorite time of year. Everything Magic happens in the Fall -- somehow, it will all be okay. Just weird.
