Day 3 - Medical Crisis

CAMP MOMMY
The Most Important Thing: FLEXIBILITY
(The kids will still have a great time, even if your day doesn't go quite as planned.)

I mentioned the Shingles outbreak on my back that broke out Saturday morning, after feeling under-the-weather for about a week. Shingles is the recurrence of the chicken pox virus, which is normally dormant in everyone who has had the chicken pox in childhood, but can become Shingles under conditions of extreme stress. I had no idea it would get so bad. I was very uncomfortable all day yesterday, with the rash spreading, sore and angry, like a very bad burn--kind of like when I got my tattoo (same place--it's wrecking my art!), but this is worse. I couldn't sleep last night, even with Tylenol PM. This morning, it was quite obviously time to go see the doctor. But I had four children in the house, and Russ had an all-day conference downtown. My Mom, my "Grammy" back-up who lives nearby in Atlanta, is out-of-town on another medical emergency in the family. I was on my own. Camp Mommy...

Thank God for the kindness of friends--and the power of begging. Zach's friend's Mom was wonderful when I asked if she could take both boys back for a couple of hours this afternoon. Haleigh's friend's Mom didn't hesitate when I asked if Haleigh could come over, even though Haleigh's friend was already gone for the afternoon on a playdate! (I didn't know that when I asked.) She offered to keep Haleigh, and then even offered to keep Tiger, who I was planning on taking with me. (It actually worked out great, with her older daughter to babysit with her mom's supervision.) I was nearly in tears at the kindness, generosity, and willingness to help from two very busy Moms with Camp Mommy issues of their own.

The kids all ended up having a great time while I got to the doctor, confirmed the diagnosis, and walked out with a handful of prescriptions. Quick trip to the pharmacy, took what I could (the one-out-of-three medications that wasn't marked "May Cause Dizziness!" and drove the rounds to pick up children. We all came home, I took the other drugs, and crawled into bed to enjoy a "movie afternoon" with my kids tucked up in the bed around me. It was actually a pretty wonderful afternoon, and they were great about taking the afternoon off for Mommy to feel better.

I AM feeling better, although it's time for the next dose, and I'm feeling it. 10 days to go on all of this, but I'm definitely on the mend. We're going to try and make it to Grammy's pool tomorrow afternoon (bring in the mail/feed the fish), and Friday we are off to Resort G'Ma & G'Pa in Florida for the long weekend. (They aren't home either--what is it with grandparents in absentia for the summer?!)
