ON DVD: The Movie SAHARA

SAHARA

I'm afraid I haven't been in a movie theatre, outside of the couch and the big (TV) screen in our own family room, in quite some time. I can't even remember the last movie we went to...oh, the drive-in, but that way way back in August. (LOVE the drive-in, but that's a whole 'nother article!)

We haven't seen a lot of new-release DVD's lately either, partly because we've been too busy (and broke!) with the recent chaos of life. But also because of the recent chaos of life, I've been so tired--I'm asleep as soon as we get the kids settled, sometimes before...(sound familiar?)

So I'm very proud to be able to review the movie SAHARA on DVD--proud mostly that I stayed awake for the whole thing!--and Honey, WHAT A GREAT MOVIE!!!

I am almost embarrassed to admit how much I LUV Matthew McCona-hottie. Ever since the admittedly somewhat obscure movie, EdTV (1999), with Jenna Elfman, who was a UPS driver in the movie, and her character's name was Shari, and Matthew (as Ed) had this one line in that movie in that sexy, lazy drawl he's got goin' on, I re-played over and over and over...

I'm not the president of the MMc fan club or anything, and I tend to forget all about him, fickle girl that I am, because he's not in US Weekly very much, not since that strange incident with the bongos...but then I see him-- hear him--in a movie, and it's lust at first sight (sound?) all over again. That body, that voice, those dimples...(Thank god I'm only two years older than the man, so at least none of this makes me a dirty old lady...)

But besides all that, I really liked SAHARA, the movie. It was epic, like The Mummy--a great, if highly implausible (granted), adventure story on a grand scale; great action, great effects. I wish I would have seen it on the Big (theatre) Screen--oh! Or at the drive-in...(There I go again!) SAHARA was very well done, from start to finish.

And I LOVE Steve Zahn, although not in the same way. He is so genuinely funny, and a very physical comedian. He was a terrific match with MMc, as the wise-cracking sidekick. Steve Zahn is my most favorite supporting actor, from his days on the ABC sit-com Coach(1989 - 1994), with Craig T. Nelson to the movie Daddy Day Care with Eddie Murphy. [On a late-breaking note, I can't confirm anywhere that Steve Zahn actually WAS on the television show Coach. I thought he played the daughter's husband--and whoever that guy was, he was hysterical, but I can't find confirmation on that anywhere online, so I could be making it up?][This is now driving me crazy!]

So a great story, great presentation, perfect male chemistry between MMc and Steve Zahn. Throw in Penelope Cruz as a strong, smart, sexy, anti-Bond-girl doctor working for the World Health Organization; William H. Macy as a retired admiral-turned-treasure-hunter; and Delroy Lindo (another favorite) as a CIA operative in Africa...all set in the stark natural beauty, color, and drama of The Sahara...this is a GREAT movie--totally unbelievable, but fun!

And I do LUV that Matthew McConaughey...
