Virtual Book Group: THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE

A year ago, a friend gave me her copy of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE and said I had to read it, that I would love it. She was so right about THE DOGS OF BABEL, so I tried, but I didn't love TTW; I couldn't get through it, and I eventually gave the book back.

My new Book Group selected THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE to read in Nov/Dec, and so I tried again, slogging through it mainly on the anticipation of lively discussion with my B&N Book Buddies. (My Group is an eclectic, enjoyable bunch that meets at our local Barnes & Noble/GA Tech -- I am the only (late) thirtysomething wife & mother with young children, so it's always interesting to hear the many different perspectives on any given book -- any given subject, for that matter!)

Unfortunately, my daughter's Orchestra Recital was re-scheduled to Book Group night, so I missed the meeting and discussion of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE last night, and now I'm up at 3:30AM, thinking about this book that I didn't even love. (I just finished the last few pages, since I couldn't sleep.)

I enjoyed the recital: seeing my daughter's excitment, enthusiasm and accomplishment. It was worth missing Book Group, no question. She is in the 4th grade, playing the Cello this year and she loves it. (At the same time, school concerts/events are a certain level of hell: standing-room only in a hot, overcrowded, elementary school "multi-purpose" room, fighting for the photo opps with all the other proud parents and feeling the barely-controlled frenetic energy of all the younger siblings running and wandering and rolling around...but I digress.)

So I missed the discussion of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, and I don't understand why it was SO popular. There was so much to this story -- the romance, the level of complication, the back-and-forth through time, the really rather horrible ending...and what's with the whole Ingrid character?! I don't get it!

If you read THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, please post a comment with your thoughts -- anything! -- or send an email to sherri@rebelhousewife.com. I will open it up for Virtual Book Group Discussion of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE (see comments below) -- I'd love to hear and share your thoughts about this book:

It was a brilliant work of disability fiction. I loved it for not just its romance and novelty value, but it's willingness to show the grittiness of the situation.
