Midtown Book Group - October 2006

Another quick note for a Monday morning: I am reading a delicious novel for a new Book Group in my new neighborhood. It's delicious, because it is a rich & satisfying read -- if I only had a glass of red wine & dark chocolate, I'd be in my own, private Rebel Housewife heaven !

The novel is VICTORINE by Catherine Texier (Pantheon Books, 2004), currently available in Bargain Books ($4.98 - Hardcover) from Barnes & Noble.

"In this lush, lyrical, and marvelously evocative novel, Catherine Texier takes a mystery from her family's past and draws from it a portrait of a remarkable woman -- her great-grandmother Victorine. A young schoolteacher in a quiet province in France, Victorine had married and had two children. But when she falls desperately in love, she makes a startling choice, leaving her family for her lover and a new life in Indochina..."

Yes, it sounds a bit of a Harlequin Romance, maybe, but it's not that fluffy. It reminds me a lot of Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve (A Rebel's Favorite Writer), which is one of my all-time favorite novels. I won't be reviewing this book formally on Rebel Reviews. I just wanted to mention it, as I'm enjoying it so much.

If you are looking for a good book, at a bargain price, get VICTORINE and read along with me -- email me at sherri@rebelhousewife.com, or feel free to Post Comments here! Enjoy--
