Late Afternoon at The Zoo

By Thursday, Day #9 of our CAMP MOMMY Summer Adventure, it was late afternoon by the time we got ourselves together and took care of some selling-the-house (or not) business. The kids played with friends, "worked" in the Beyblade store (made a sale to one of the friends!), and hung out, watched a little TV, but not too much.

We've learned the importance of getting out of the house for an adventure everyday, and we decided to go visit the frogs and snakes in The Reptile House at Zoo Atlanta. It has been rainy and gray all week. The Zoo is the perfect non-pool option for bad weather, since there are several places to hang out under cover, out of the rain: The Reptile House, The Gorilla House, The NEW Living Tree House, etc. We headed downtown through the late afternoon traffic and got to the zoo at 4pm. We discovered the gate closes at 4:30pm, but they don't chase everybody out until 5:30pm, which is perfect. As Zoo members, we can go to the zoo anytime, and with free admission, it doesn't matter if we stay all day or only an hour.

Late afternoon is a beautiful time to be at the zoo. It is generally cooler, although that wasn't a problem today--we actually got rained on, but it was no big deal. By 4pm, everybody else is gone or going, and we can wander at leisure. The zoo keepers and employees are feeding the animals and cleaning up, but they're more willing to chat--those zoo people LOVE to share news and info!--and the animals tend to be more active in the late afternoon, before they go in for the night. It is a very peaceful, laid-back time and place to be.

One of the very best things about the golden zoo hour, between 4:30 and 5:30pm--all the concessions and attractions are CLOSED, and we can't spend any money!!!

Day #9 Total = $15
$10 Lunch at Chick-Fil-A (with Buy One Get One Free Coupon!) & $5 at the Zoo for a train ride (we got there just in time for the last ride of the day) and smashed pennies...you know, you pay 50 cents to crank a penny through a machine for a little souveneir? We have quite the collection of smashed pennies from all over the place...quite a business!
