BOOKS: Legal Thrills!

Are you expecting me to talk about John Grisham? A fair enough assumption when you mention 'legal thriller'--and I do enjoy a good JG read every once in a while--but wrong, in this case. I've got something different, some have said even better, for you today:

Reckless Homicide
by Ira Genberg
(St. Martin's Press (hardback), 1998)

Reckless Homicide is a gripping read about law and legal practice behind-the-scenes. When the stakes are high for a high-profile lawyer (representing an airline in a fatal plane crash) and personal involvement even higher (the lawyer's brother was flying the plane--and may have been on a drug-induced suicide mission), it's a page-turner you can't put down. The sex is pretty good, too--better than Grisham!

An interesting side note about this book: I first bought and read it several months ago, on the advice of our attorney, who told me about his associate who had written it, and what a surprise it had been to the lawyers of their upscale law firm in downtown Atlanta that Ira, a fairly mild-mannered kind of guy and a hard-working lawyer, had published this blockbuster of a book--in his spare time. I really enjoyed Reckless Homicide, especially with this little tidbit of connection and background.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ira Genberg recently over lunch and talking with him about Reckless Homicide (yes, I now have a signed copy!), his next and future book projects, and his publishing experience. He was gracious enough to answer all my eager-author questions and talk with me about The Rebel Housewife, too. I've never had this kind of experience before, one-on-one, author-to-author. It's fascinating to meet the person behind the book, and relate the book to the face you see on the back-cover. I think it's fairly straightforward with non-fiction authors--what you see is, generally, what you get. Not so with fiction, where you can't imagine what storylines, characters, spice and plot twists lurk behind an otherwise "mild-mannered" facade! Enjoy the book!
