BOOKS: I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT

I Don't Know How She Does It
The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother

by Allison Pearson
(Alfred A. Knopf (hardback), 2002)

"I don't know how she does it!"

How many times have we heard that in our lives as Mom (working outside the home or not)?! This book was much-publicized and eagerly anticipated: finally, a book about our life experience after Bridget Jones' Diary, in the happily-ever-after...

Well, not quite. Although the two books do have something in common--both diary-format, both penned by a somewhat neurotic, English chick as the main character--I have to admit, I enjoyed Bridget Jones' daily ramblings, humorous angst and innermost secrets a lot more. The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother, even though it is more like my life with husband, children and all the associated obligations...quite frankly, wore me out! This is how it IS, but not necessarily how it should be, and since I live life like this everyday, reading about it is not really entertaining. I read to escape my life for a few minutes at a time, not to re-live the stress and overwhelm in somebody else's telling! Without a heavy dose of humor anyway--

For a really GREAT, relaxing, funny read about marriage, kids, and life as a working woman, my recommendation is the National Bestseller:

A Marriage Made in Heaven -- or -- Too Tired For an Affair
by Erma Bombeck
(HarperCollins (paperback) 1993)

Erma Bombeck may have been dealing with life in a different era, and yes, things are a lot different now, but her humor, advice, and wisdom are truly classic, if not timeless.
