OTHER STUFF: Kiwi Services!

This probably won't apply for Vicki over in Hong Kong (sorry!), but I've got to tell you-all about my holiday carpet cleaning experience with Kiwi Carpet Services (http://www.kiwiservices.com -- Atlanta/Dallas/Ft. Worth/Houston).

Throughout last year, I'd been receiving postcards from this service with unbelievable offers to clean anything and everything in my home. I got the carpets cleaned in December, before the holidays. They were beautiful--I couldn't believe what they were able to get out of our pastel-colored carpets in the kids' rooms (mental note: stick to the darker, highly-patterned carpeting in children's rooms!): juice, crayon, glue, paint, science experiments, make up, nail polish, dog urine, kid urine (Tiger's potty-training stage), dog poop, kid poop, blood...even hot pink highlighter pen. We were finally able to put away all of the small stain-covering rugs (flowers, hearts, butterflies, etc.) that had, of necessity, sprouted up all over Haleigh's room over the last three years. I was very happy, very impressed--6 rooms for $145, which wasn't exactly the deal on the postcard (it never is, is it?!), but well worth it, especially with a one-year warranty...

We went to Florida for a few days for New Year's and hired a pet sitter to come round twice a day and let the dogs out and back in, hang out and keep them company for a bit every day. The pet sitter was fantastic, and that all worked out well--until I went upstairs to discover dog pee and poop all over Haleigh and Tiger's rooms. Apparently, they weren't happy with us for leaving them for three nights and this was their not-so-subtle response. (I had told the pet sitter not to worry about going upstairs, since the dogs never do--)

Thank God for one-year warranties! I was highly skeptical of the whole thing when I had them come out the first time. (You know the disappointment to have a carpet cleaned, have to wait for it to dry--and all the stains magically re-appear!) And then I was overwhelmingly impressed. I forgot to tell you they have this special "dry" cleaning procedure, so the carpets were dry instantly instead of having to wait 24 hours to put furniture back in place--and wait for the stains to resurface!

I called Kiwi, they came, they inspected...and an hour later I had three beautiful, clean, great-smelling carpets again! ($15 trip charge and $4/room = $27!) They were careful to point out their other services, too--"Did you do this wood floor yourself? We could fix this for you--" They also do air ducts, carpet repairs, upholstery cleaning--you name it. (I declined this time, "but thanks for pointing that out to me...")

I can highly recommend Kiwi Services.
Check them out at: www.kiwiservices.com.
(Sounds like an expanding franchise--they might be in your area soon!)
(Probably not Hong Kong, though.)
