BOOKS: The 100 Best Things I've Sold on eBay

Speaking of moving (“On The Market” in The Rebel Column, 4/18/2005)--and having to get rid of junk...okay, stuff. Sometimes, stuff can be valuable, even if you are over it. Now is the perfect time to introduce you to an author friend of mine, The Queen of Auctions, and her fantastic book about buying and selling on eBay:

The 100 Best Things I’ve Sold on eBay:
My Story--by The Queen of Auctions

By Lynn Dralle
(All Aboard, December 2003)

I met Lynn in New York at a National Publicity Summit in July 2004, and we hit it off immediately. I brought a copy of her book home with me, and it languished in my “To Be Read” pile for several months, I'm sorry to say, while life rolled on at its typically hectic pace. By Thanksgiving, 100 Best Things seemed like the perfect carry-along book for the holiday weekend with the in-laws in Florida. I didn’t want anything too all-consuming while I was hanging out with the family; something easy to pick up, easy to put down (short chapters, lots of pictures); and a good starter for interesting conversation. (People LOVE to talk about eBay--it's like a new religion with its own very devoted group of followers.)

I have never sold anything on eBay, but I have purchased quite a few things, good and bad. eBay is of particular interest to us now, as we begin to clean up and clear out the accumulation of years to sell our house and move. I still have to sell the 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer I bought on eBay and wrote about on The Rebel Housewife ("eBay Frenzy" in The Rebel Column, 7/16/2004). The monster is still sitting on our back driveway, two years later. We didn’t bond like I’d hoped. I tried to give it to my husband for Christmas last year, and still it sits...but I digress...

I knew Lynn’s book would be filled with interesting tips and strategies for selling on eBay, which it is, and it’s so much more than that! I ended up reading it cover-to-cover over the holiday, and LOVED it.

The 100 Best Things I’ve Sold on eBay is a fascinating case study of 100 of Lynn’s auction experiences on eBay as she successfully transitioned her grandmother's antique business from a storefront in Bellingham, Washington, to the online marketplace. Lynn tells her story, and her grandmother's, as she recounts each auction. She gives a brief history of each item, how she came to acquire it, how she priced and listed the item on eBay, how it sold, and for how much, along with pictures. 100 Best Things is presented in such a unique format, with great pictures and design, story and heart--it’s very easy and enjoyable to read. It is much more than a catalog-ish 100 Best, because Lynn is one heck of a writer and storyteller, and crafted this book into a wonderful story of family, history, relationships, travel, and ultimately, a single mother, taking up her legacy, following her passion, and building a business to support herself and her children.

100 Best Things is a great book to learn how to eBay. It’s also an inspiring story for entrepreneurial women, a primer of hope for those who may be searching for a way to build a career and a business around life and responsibilities with children. Lynn has grown her own employees, so to speak, with her children’s and other family involvement in her online auction business--to their benefit. From the stories and anecdotes, it sounds like they are all having a great time, and doing very, very well on eBay.

So well, in fact, that Lynn, The Queen of Auctions, is a recognized eBay expert, and already has her second book out, so check it out, too:
