UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN

I was going to hold off on this review until Back-To-School in September. You know, Mom’s New Year, when we have time to...well, time to do ANYTHING not completely centered around occupying, entertaining, feeding, driving, referee-ing, and otherwise serving, our half-pint, invariably “bored” offspring during summer vacation (Camp Mommy notwithstanding!).

BUT--this is too good to wait, and it has made such an impact on my life recently, I can’t wait to share it. Yes, I am almost religious in my reverence and enthusiasm for this book! (I do try to restrain my New Age ju-ju; I am nothing if not practical and down-to-earth--really!) The thought that somebody out there might need this now, as much as I did when I accidentally came to it, well...let’s talk about it NOW:

UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN:
Achieve ANY Breakthrough Goal in 30 Days
by Cynthia Kersey
(Rodale, 2005)

I came upon Cynthia Kersey and UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN by accident (Fate, maybe?), when I was placing an order with The Literary Guild for The Ya-Yas Special Edition (double feature LITTLE ALTARS EVERYWHERE & DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD) featured in Rebel Column: Summer Reading & The Ya-Yas.

I needed to fill out the order to qualify for free shipping. UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN looked interesting--and it was the right price. I didn’t know I was looking for a book like this at the time (self-help/goal setting), but I am always drawn toward stories and examples of strong, independent women as role models--and it was the right price--so it worked.

After I ordered online, I saw UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN on display at the bookstore. I will admit to a momentary twinge, thinking: “Why isn’t THE REBEL HOUSEWIFE RULES on the shelf in this store, much less on feature display?!” (The frustrations of a smaller publisher, aarrgghhh!)(As wonderful as Conari Press is!)(kiss, kiss!) But I digress, and artistic jealousy aside...I still didn’t quite know what to expect from this book.

And then, really, it changed my life--did I already mention that?

I go through times in my life where I’m very self-help oriented and motivation-minded. When, for whatever reason, I’m at a stall with one thing or another, at loose ends, ready to launch a new project, or ready to make a change. I am always open to a new adventure. The wisdom and experience of others can fire the imagination with new ideas and inspiration.

Everyone faces challenges and obstacles in life, and I am no exception. I don’t (or, at least, I try not to!) dwell on the negative on The Rebel Housewife--this is women’s humor, it’s supposed to be funny! (At least most of the time.) So without going into personal challenges and obstacles, I can only say UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN came into my life at exactly the time when I needed it most--it’s just that kind of book.

I opened UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN as a skeptic, having “been there, done that” with all manner of goal-setting, achievement, and “change your life” books and programs. I was hooked by the message of hope and reassurance, with a step-by-step, 30-day plan; simple, but do-able; beautiful in concept.

And then there’s the website at www.unstoppablewomen.com: online support, resources, community, and something called the UWC – Unstoppable Women Challenge, which is pulling together and “giving back” in action, to strengthen and support women from all walks of life, one woman at a time (two, actually, counting yourself and your UWC buddy).

The basis of UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN, and the UWC, is Daily Action: one small step every day. First, you figure out what you want to achieve, if only the very broad, general direction. Second, you commit to one Daily Action, and reading one short chapter everyday, with an affirmation, concept, example/story, and a little cheerleading by Cynthia to help you along the way.

Still, I had no idea this would really work; that I would be able to keep up with it; or that it would, ultimately--and actually in the first week--change my life.

While the answers are not right there in the book--and how could they be, with millions of unique women with so many different life goals and challenges?--it is amazing what you can come up with if you give yourself a chance, with some guidance, encouragement, and perspective.

At this point, 23 days into my personal UWC, I don’t know if I will achieve The Big Goal I had set within the 30 days. I admit to reaching Day #15, and feeling some discouragement, some panic, especially since I didn’t (still don’t) know how to get there, or see clearly how to get from Point A to Point B, exactly. The type of person I am, that not knowing or seeing can drive me crazy, but One Daily Action, and reading a little bit of a great book everyday--it was too easy to give up, and the results were almost immediate. I am Unstoppable, and that helps me work through that “Type-A” personality disorder.

One day at a time, moving in the right direction. It is the process of UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN that will change your life. Order UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN from Amazon.com with the link below:
